The English as an Additional Language department (EAL) supports pupils who join Culford Prep School with a first language other than English. New pupils are assessed on arrival to establish their level of spoken and written English and decisions about specific support for EAL are made based on each individual's needs.
Work is undertaken with pupils across the year groups ranging from beginners and elementary, to intermediate and beyond. Where applicable, additional English skills lessons are provided and pupils are withdrawn from lessons in non-core subjects in order to develop their English. In addition, we prepare and enter pupils for appropriate examinations, such as the University of Cambridge affiliated KET and PET qualifications, to enable pupils to further access the curriculum, as well as enjoy the wealth of extracurricular activities on offer at Culford.
As far as possible, EAL lessons take place within the regular timetable; however, some lessons may take place before or after school. There is an additional charge for EAL lessons which can be found by clicking here.
Trips and Days Out
Culford also aims to enrich our pupils’ cultural experiences while living in England. With this in mind, we organise termly day trips to places of interest such as Cambridge, the Houses of Parliament and The British Museum in London.
This is, of course, in addition to the weekend activities which all boarders enjoy, including cinema and shopping trips, days out at the seaside, cycling and go-karting. To find out more about weekend activities, click here.
