International Pupils

Culford welcomes international students from all over the world who come to us for an outstanding British boarding experience and a life-changing education. Young people of all nationalities are welcome at Culford School and boarding places are available from the age of 7. The combination of academic study with a wide range of offerings in sports, arts, and activities ensures that our students are active, engaged and happy. Most students come to Culford for one year or more, but we sometimes consider stays of two terms.  

Senior School Entrance Overview

There are 375 Senior School students, of whom 200 are boarders and 17% of all students are from overseas. The table below shows the study options at Culford:

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

All pupils for whom English is an additional language are assessed during the admissions process and also upon entry to the School. Students' must speak, read, and write English to a level that enable them to access the curriculum independently in the classroom. Culford's specialist teachers in EAL  offer individual or group lessons, which are either part of a pupil’s daily schedule, or after school.

Entry Requirements

International applicants will need to submit the following:

1.    Registration Form

2.    Registration Fee to cover testing

3.    School reports from current and previous year

4.    Test Results   (arranged through the Culford Admissions Office):

English language with essay (EAL), Mathematics, and a General aptitude test

5.    Interview via Skype or in person

International Pupil Entry: Sixth Form

For those pupils who are already studying GCSEs or IGCSEs the entry qualifications are 7 GCSE passes,  including  Maths and English, at Grade B or above with Grade A or B in the subjects to be studied at A-level.

International Pupil Entry: GCSE or Fourth Form

All pupils must take entrance exams in English and mathematics. Arrangements for these can be made through an agent or through the present school. Examinations must be independently supervised.

Learning English at Culford School

Prospective pupils must have an English test when they join so that we can assess their English language needs. Teaching may be for individuals or in small groups. An extra charge is made for lessons in English as an Additional Language (EAL)

English for Sixth Form Students

If English is not their first language pupils will study for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination. Pupils must have this qualification for entry to a British university.


All international pupils attending Culford School must have a guardian who lives in the UK. A guardian must be an adult with suitable accommodation for the pupil. An older brother or sister who is studying in the UK cannot be a guardian.

Payment of Fees

Parents who live overseas must pay two terms’ fees in advance. The credit balance will be repaid after the final term when all expenses have been met. Fees must be paid in GBP sterling through a UK bank account. Find out more about Culford School Fees. 

Culford School Uniform

All Culford School pupils must wear school uniform. The School can arrange to buy this and provide name tapes. The Matron in the Boarding House will look after clothes and let parents know when replacements are needed.  Luggage can be left at the school during the holidays. Find out more about Culford uniform.
