Helping in Malawi

Since 2009, a group of Lower Sixth pupils and teachers have travelled to Malawi for three weeks to carry out voluntary work in ‘the warm heart of Africa’. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, and the experience for those pupils who get the opportunity to go is life changing.

Pupils have to raise money for their trip and work hard throughout the year to fund their travel and various charitable projects that they undertake whilst there. The pupils build classrooms and teacher’s accommodation at two village schools, providing materials and resources for several children’s homes and visiting other projects funded by the money raised by our pupils. Mr Andrew Deane (Culford Head of Modern Languages) taught in Malawi for a number of years before coming to Culford, and co-ordinates the experience of Malawian culture and politics.

Student Applications

We are inviting Sixth Form pupils to apply to assist in the running of the shop as a service activity. This may well appeal to pupils wishing to develop a leadership or charitable niche for themselves. This role can also count towards the Duke of Edinburgh Gold award as well as a pupil's individual fundraising totals for Malawi.

If you are a Culford Sixth Form pupil and would like to apply to help in the Nearly New Shop, please click here to download a Student Application Form.
