Beyond the Classroom

Culford pupils taking part in an outdoor activity

As well as providing a brilliant academic start in life, Culford Pre-Prep offers children an all-round education. Along with their Forest School sessions, pupils at Culford Pre-Prep and Nursery enjoy a rich and varied timetable including art, music, drama and sport including Tiny Tots Tennis, country dancing and ballet.

Art and Drama

A: Allowing children to develop their creativity

R: Rich, varied and exciting curriculum

T: Through exploration

Art at the Pre-Prep School provides children with a unique opportuity of perceiving themselves and the world, which is essential to basic education. It grants visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world.

We also explore art through many cross-curricular activities including music, dance, forest school where they build a relationship between nature and art – role-play and imaginative play. By observing children playing without adult intervention, it reveals their innate ‘drama’ skills such as the ability to create, adopt and sustain roles, to interact with others in imagined settings and to communicate feelings and atmosphere.

French and Spanish

Between the ages of 3 and 9 years, a child is able to pick up languages with great ease and few inhibitions. From 9 years of age onwards, the inner ear starts to close, making it more difficult for a child to differentiate between the different sounds. As such, French and Spanish is introduced at Culford at a very young age.

The emphasis in class is learning languages through fun activities, such as group renditions of traditional songs.

When pupils make the transition to Prep School, these languages should be as familiar to them as maths and English. They are then introduced to writing to languages.

Sport at Pre-Prep and Nursery

At Culford, sport is a part of all children’s everyday curriculum. Alongside literacy and numeracy, the pupils enjoy many sports during their time here and are able to work with specialised sports teachers. Pupils have access to the brilliant sporting facilities at Culford including the six lane 25m heated indoor pool, champion standard Indoor Tennis Centre and purpose built Sports and Tennis Centre.

Culford Nursery pupils have dedicated PE sessions, led by Nursery staff. As well as their timetabled lessons, the children are able to take part in specialised Tiny Tots Tennis sessions each Friday morning before school. These sessions are led by tennis coaches from the Sports and Tennis Centre and teach young children the principles of hitting, serving and co-ordination. Pupils can also take part in individual tennis and swimming lessons.

At Pre-Prep, children take part in sport every day as part of the curriculum. Throughout the year a wide range of sports are covered including basic ball skills, hockey, rugby, netball, gymnastics, dance, tennis and swimming. Pupils are taught catching and throwing, receiving and sending. They work on spatial awareness and listening by following instructions.

There are several opportunities for the pupils to showcase their sporting abilities throughout the year. At the end of the Autumn term (December), the children take part in their annual Dance Show for parents, friends and teachers. In the summer term, we host a Tennis Tournament and a Sports Afternoon where parents are invited to watch their children compete against other Houses. Another sporting highlight of the year is the annual Swimming Gala.
